Round and round we don’t go

Okay, we’re in a Test Track car, with the climbing hairpin turns ahead of us, but at a complete standstill. The sounds and lights of the ride continue around us, and we can see other cars, but no one is moving. Combined with our delay while in the Standby queue, I’m guessing they’re having trouble with the ride today.

There’s no announcement of any delay or “please stand by” or anything like that. I’m wondering how long we’ll be stuck here before we start moving again. It’s not like we have a lot of spare time built into our schedule.

Fortunately, the answer to “how long” is “not very.” Within a couple of minutes, the cars start up again, and we’re on our way.

We climb towards the first hairpin turn, but we’re not moving very fast – 5 mph at most. That’s not right. Around the turn we go, slowly, with almost no perceptible centripetal effect. Whee… ?

Up we continue to climb… for about twenty feet, and then the car jerks to a stop again. Sigh.

This time we get announcements, an obviously prerecorded female voice urging us to remain seated, as the ride may restart at any moment.

The guys and I are in good spirits, making the best of this. Admittedly, there’s an element of, “Hey, we’ve never done this before” to it. We have time to look around in the dim show building and absorb details that we miss at normal speed. Of course, we also realize that this almost certainly dooms our chance of riding Mission: Space. Maybe if they’ll get Test Track moving again soon, and if we can walk straight onto M: S… otherwise, no.

The “Hey, we’ve never done this before” fun wears off after five minutes of sitting in an immobile ride vehicle. The atmospheric noises of the ride are still loud, even with no one moving, leading me to realize that they are artificial. The “please remain seated” lady repeats her message every couple of minutes.

She’s starting to get on my nerves.
